Here's the story...
Given that most of my mornings are free now, I decided to shoot pictures with my very old Panasonic semi-DSLR. Note - VERY OLD. But I needed new batteries because the current 2 I have die real quickly. I had set out to search for them a few times 2-3 years ago at Sim Lim Square, the hub of electronic stuff. They were out of stock. I was even told that they might be discontinued.  Imagine my excitement when I found that the above dubious shop carries an upgraded version of the battery. A very young salesman quoted S$46-50 for a single battery.  I went over next door to my usual haunt, Alan Photo, to ask for a second opinion. They did not carry the battery model anymore. The usual salesman I buy my camera gear from told me that it should not cost more than S$20-25.  That's almost half the price I was quoted earlier! So I went to another shop nearby and found that they had the exact model. I was upfront with the more elderly salesman I met there. I shared with him my disgust with some dubious darling. He chuckled and mentioned that the first salesman probably thought I was a tourist. Rip off a tourist at almost double the price??? Anyway, this salesman quoted me a reasonable price which I went back to Alan Photo to verify again. In the end, I got my 2 batteries. I went home with a determination to expose the dishonesty and did this only about a month later. Lesson learnt - always shop around for prices, especially at Sim Lim Square. If you are a tourist or look like one (do I???), be upfront and report any dubious salesperson. Well, I did. Here. :) Labels: enraged, ruby tuesday, wordless wednesday |

 I drive across the border now and then to escape the hustle and bustle of Singapore.When you run some errands on the same trip and yes, that includes some grocery shopping at one of the Giant hypermarts there, the cost of petrol to drive up there is almost negligible. Take for example a bottle of Nestle's Bliss yougurt drink.  NTUC @ Singpaore : approximately S$2.60 Giant @ JB : RM$3.99 (on offer once in awhile) The current exchange rate is about S$1 : RM$3.40. I bought something like 10 bottles. Do your maths and you can imagine how much savings I enjoy from shopping for grocery, tidbits and household items, getting a professional haircut and of course, indulging in numerous savory hawker fare!  I got 8-9 tubs for my family, friends and students.  I got myself one tray of 30. Nevertheless, the silver lining of my regular cost savings trip does present some scattered dark clouds. Thanks to our protectionism policy, Singapore cars can only enter JB on a minimal 3/4 fuel tank. In return, the Malaysian authorities has slapped a 20L limit pump rule at petrol kiosks across the border. Recently, I was stopped by a customs officer for a tray of eggs and pet food (dry). Apparently, under a new ruling, all meat items from Malaysia, with the exception of seafood, are prohibited. Is this to curb the spread of diseases via meat products or just in-your-face protectionism at work again? You decide. In case you were wondering, I was let off with a gentle reminder because I truly was not aware of the new ruling - with my purchases all intact. :) Labels: ruby tuesday, wordless wednesday |

Last Sunday, after checking out some dogs I was planning to adopt at Pasir Ris, I just had to swing by Mega Courts which was just round the corner.
 I've only seen this gadget in the movies. Imagine multi-tasking across 3 LCD monitors! I was there to witness a First Person Shooter (FPS) game demo with drool-laden pristine graphics sweeping across all 3 screens!  And check out the crazy specs! There was an Acer model on display but HP's aesthetics beat the former hands down and jiggling in the pockets! Think SLEEK AND SEXY monitors.  After 3 hours of pacing up and down the mall and mulling over the 5% price tag knockoff and 4 freebies , I decided to put the apparently very seductive purchase on hold.
